By definition, Media literacy pertains to the ability to access, analyze, evaluate, and create media in a variety of forms. This involves empowering citizens by providing necessary competencies to engage in both traditional media and new technology. Information literacy on the other hand is the ability to recognize when information is needed and to effectively manage information in various formats. Together, these concepts make up the concept of Media and Information Literacy wherein individuals possess adequate skills to navigate through the complexities of modern-day media technologies.

Having the ability to determine whether a set of information is accurate or not plays a major significance to one's life. Information is power, and having the correct information at your disposal would greatly aid in promoting the spread of knowledge and help create a community of individuals who are aware of their surroundings and equipped with the right weapons to fight off misinformation, disinformation, and malinformation.

A Media and Information literate individual can help foster a tradition of information checking through cross-referencing and fact-checking. It helps in proper information dissemination, building public opinion in a positive aspect, and decrease the risk of being manipulated by fake propaganda and outgoing campaigns fueled by manipulated information. All in all, it can improve an individual, thus improving the community.
